Another look at the October Asheville flights, while the rivers were still flooding, of Jeff Ross (Aztec to Ashe County, GEV) and Stan Sherrard (Cessna 182T to Avery County, 7A8) with relief mission supplies. Pictured items on the ramps were about half of what was crammed in the airplanes. On the right is Jeff on short final to GEV Runway 28.

Jeff Ross reports on his Asheville assist flight: With the help of my friend Gary Bucannan I took a trip on Monday October 7th to GEV airport (Ashe County) in Jefferson, NC with about 900lbs of supplies for the disaster relief efforts. The airlift was coordinated by the Jersey Aero Club which is based out of Lakewood, NJ (N12) along with an Asheville church group whose area got hit pretty hard during Helene. I met members of the Jersey Aero Club at Monmouth airport (BLM) as it had longer runways. I flew non-stop to GEV, unloaded and flew non-stop back. Total flying for the day was about 7 hours.

At EAA Chapter 501's September 15th Young Eagles Flight Rally, flying was held up for two hours due to a low ceiling. Our ground crew was kept busy keeping families entertained. Among our calendar photos, Dave Jones is showing how kids can learn more about aviation with free on-line access to EAA's AeroEducate program. Dawn Ross, Diane Sandow and Irene McGinniss were registering 101 Young Eagles (who were later flown by our nine pilots). Chapter 501 Y.E. Coordinator Allen Dunn was conducting the pre-flight ground crew briefing. A couple of Young Eagles were closely inspecting Adam Ross's display of the aircraft photos and statistics of all the planes that would be flying that day.

Oshkosh 2024! Nine EAA Chapter 501 members, maybe more, were at AirVenture this year. Here are eight of them... Rowan and Tom Barthmus seated at the Brown Arch, Beverly Weintraub, Jeff Ross, Matt Lamm,
Nate Bautista and Jessica Daisy at Boeing Plaza under the extended flaps of the B-52, and Heather Sherrard standing by Heather and Stan's C182 at the North 40.

Oshkosh 2024! At 4:30pm on Friday, July 19, Pete Nancoz emailed us this photo with message: "Arrived around noon today. Grounds are soft, but no problems taxiing in a Skyhawk." Looks like Pete is in the North 40 that is already filling up. Chapter 501's first OSH arrival last year on the early Friday was Allan Feid and his Kitfox, first customer all alone on the South 40. We have nine members who say they plan to be at AirVenture this year, along with friends and family, traveling by planes, trains and automobiles.

We had our 31st annual Fly-In on June 1, at Lincoln Park Airport for the first time in many years. On a beautiful clear day only a handful of pilots flew in. We think, after several rainy weekends everyone was home catching up on delayed springtime chores. Steve Vail said it right: "It was a great Chapter picnic, but just barely a fly-in." Our calendar photos show the registration desk in "action" along with Nick Anzano serving his own recipe of hot pulled pork sandwiches on brioche buns. That made the day!

Our June calendar page salutes the Ross family! For a number of years at our Young Eagles Flight Rallies, Jeff flying the Aztec, together with Dawn, Adam and Allison handling registration and ground crew, have teamed up to help get a vast number of youngsters airborne for free plane rides. Rowen Barthmus got the photos at our April 21 event.

April 21, 2024 at Lincoln Park Airport: Rowen Barthmus' photo at our Young Eagles Flight Rally captures Matt Lamm (Cessna 182H) with three Sea Cadets and parents. In the distance, climbing out of Runway 01, is Vince Lalomia (Cessna 170B) starting a flight that will go around Wanaque Reservoir. Eleven Chapter 501 pilots that day flew 130 kids.

Off to a wet start! Flying began one hour late at our April 23, 2023 Young Eagles Flight Rally. Rain ended at 9:00am and it quickly turned good VFR. Chapter 501's base of operations that day was in the open hangar adjacent to Aero Safety Training.

After many low-overcast days, the sky finally cleared on February 3rd, and Pete Nancoz did what all pilots were looking forward to do... fly! Pete's message on Facebook was, "First flight in a couple of months. Three instrument approaches and some night flying." Pete took the photo over Pompton Plains heading southwest just after sunset. He was also trying out a new iPad mount in his C172N.

On a rainy December 27th Aero Safety Training's Mike Peschetti is showing off one of AST's two new Pipistrel Alpha Trainers in their fleet. AST also now has two C172s. In the top right corner of the photo is N07's brand new lighted windsock. It is mounted in a segmented circle that shows the traffic pattern and is calibrated to fully extend at a 15 knot wind speed.

Surf's up! On December 20th Dick Wedemeyer took this photo of eastern Long Island's Moriches Inlet while flying a Coast Guard Air Auxiliary patrol assignment. That was the day after a Noreaster with strong winds and up to 5 inches of rain pounded the Northeast. Moriches Inlet looks like it has been rearranged a little!
