With the December calendar photo we salute the "Friends of EAA Chapter 501" who volunteer to help run our Young Eagles Flight Rallies. Here are Allison and Dawn Ross along with Diane Sandow at the registration desk on May 21st. Also regularly donating their time in recent years are Adam Ross and Rudy Steinthal. Chapter 501 members learned long ago that they cannot manage these big events without lots of extra help!

The Aeroflex-Andover based 1947 Luscombe 8E owned by Steve Vail, Mike Dzurny and Bill Leavens has flown many Chapter 501 Young Eagles in recent years. But, no longer. On October 13 Steve ferried the ship to its new owner down in Lakewood. The new owner, flying a club 172, flew Steve back to his car parked at Aeroflex. On the trip north, Steve had a rare sunset photo opportunity during our rainiest October in a long time. Steve said, "Beautiful evening to fly!"

At our September 13th meeting the assembled Chapter 501 members had no trouble hearing Dave Jones with the microphone using our brand new speaker system bought with Young Eagles credits. They were all attentive to listening while Dave was announcing our selections of two EAA/Ray Foundation Scholarship candidates for private pilot training.

Just outside Oshkosh-AirVenture's Blue Barn on July 25th EAA's Chris Gauger took this photo of Chapter 501 representatives who have just hung our new sign pointing to the East to our Lincoln Park, NJ home base 657NM away. Kneeling are Urban Sutter, Paolo Grassi, and Allan Feid, Jr. Standing are Alexei Smirnov, Matt Lamm, Jim Bordino, Pete Nancoz, Dave Jones and Jeff Ross.

AirVenture arrival. On July 22 Paolo Grassi is just a few seconds away from setting down his SR-20 on Oshkosh Runway 27's Green Dot. Looks like rain showers in the distant northwest will not be a factor.

Chapter 501's Flight Advisor Ron Reinartz (tan ballcap below the Aztec's horizontal stabilizer) is finishing up his briefing for pilots and ground crew at our June 11th Young Eagles Flight Rally. It is about 9:00am. Vitus Holzner's photo shows nine aircraft lined up and ready to fly. Out of sight to the left are a mob of parents and youngsters registering for free rides. By noontime 110 happy kids had gotten their rides and flight certificates.

The rain stopped by mid-morning on April 23, it cleared up, and nine Chapter 501's pilots flew 80 Young Eagles at Lincoln Park Airport. In our May calendar photo is Aztec owner/pilot Jeff Ross briefing a Young Eagle who will shortly get his Y.E. Certificate. Looking on are family and our two Chapter 501 member escorts.

With perfect weather on March 21 Steve Vail and the Luscombe, with Allen Dunn along for the ride got some flying in, wrapping up with lunch at Blairstown. Steve's email said, "Gotta Fly! Spring is here. Fabulous day to fly the Hudson corridor." His photos were shared with Chapter 501 members.

Our March calendar page, with photos from our 2022 events, is a reminder of EAA Chapter 501's events on the 2023 schedule ahead. If it doesn't snow on the last full day of winter, our 3/19 Young Eagles Flight Rally could be a lot of fun. There already are 94 kids signed up through www.YEDay.org who are counting on good weather. The Sea Cadets will be coming back.

On December 28 Charlie Derk and the RV-10 made a Pennsylvania-Long Island round trip. Eastbound at 7,500 and just above the haze layer he got our February calendar photo. Charlie posted it on Facebook later, saying... "These views never get old... when you have a @LycomingEngines Thunderbolt strapped to the front of a light and slick aircraft, getting above the busy NY airspace is quick!"

Vitus Holzner, EAA Chapter 501's newest Young Eagles pilot, took this photo at 9:03am Sunday October 23rd, just before he boarded his Mooney M20F to join eight other pilots who over the next three hours gave free airplane rides to 96 youngsters. The registration desk was just getting busy! That's Dawn Ross, aided by Diane Sandow and Christine Murray doing the paperwork and printing the Young Eagles Flight certificates. At the Aero Educate desk in the distance beyond the canopy is Jessica Daisy, ready to brief parents on how they can make use of EAA's newest youth aviation initiative.
